Waste - A Shared Service
Sponsored by Disposal Services Agency

Disposal Services Authority

The workstream will include brief presentations from Nino Moscardini of Gartner on its Green IT Scorecard, Peter Hunt of WasteCare will present on its work in handling IT for the DSA and Les Taylor will give a brief overview of the DSA.

Delegates will be invited to complete a questionnaire at the start of the workstream. The information will be fed into Gartner's Green IT Scorecard and the results will be fed back towards the end of the workstream and added into the whole discussion of how we view our redundant IT equipment and its replacement - valuable assets or expensive waste?

Thinking outside the "circle"
Sponsored by International Business Wales

International Business Wales

The tradition of locating data centers within a few miles of their target end-users has been challenged in recent years. Organisations have struggled to source sites with suitable power and communications infrastructure whilst higher speed connectivity goes some way towards eliminating latency concerns. With an estimated short fall of 500,000 sq. ft, of data centre space in the UK and a predicted growth in London volume of only 2.2% per year over the next four years, the critical question being asked is where is the solution? This panel discussion brings together a varied group to discuss the options open to organisations who have, so far, looked no further than the M25 for data centre space.

Compliance - Creating Competitive Advantage
Sponsored by Field Fisher Waterhouse

Field Fisher Waterhouse

This Workstream will be led by Hamish Sandison, a partner at Field Fisher Waterhouse and a Non- Executive Director of the NCC, with contributions from other Field Fisher Waterhouse partners.

The focus will be on how to create competitive advantage for your organisation through legal compliance with Green IT standards - adding value rather than just ticking boxes. The aim will be to show how you can create a Green IT environment which is not only legally compliant but also good for your business as a supplier, user or investor in IT products and services.

We will start from the following definition of "Green IT" - "optimal use of information and communication technology (ICT) for managing the environmental sustainability of enterprise operations and the supply chain, as well as that of its products, services and resources, throughout their lifecycles." Gartner Report, "Green IT: The New Industry Shock Wave" (7 December 2007)

We will address 3 main areas:

Compliant Products - the legal duties on producers, distributors and users of IT products

Sustainable Sourcing - making the IT supply chain more sustainable

Achieving a Return on Green Investment (RoGI)

Importance of understanding IT within the business
Tim Bishop, Chief Strategy Officer, Siemens

Implementing technology creates opportunity to impact carbon footprint, but its changes in behaviour that deliver the results. These often require education, changes in the role of management, and extraordinary levels of early-life nurturing of new workstyles. Tim Bishop reflects on Siemens own adoption of “location independent working” as well as studies of other organisations, and the contemporary tools such as strategy maps which help focus and deliver organisational change.
